Overview
The Wastewater Treatment & Resource Recovery Initiative advances sustainable water management by developing innovative solutions for produced water treatment, municipal wastewater reuse, and waste-to-biomaterial conversion. By enhancing resource recovery and promoting circular economy principles, the initiative supports Qatar’s water security and environmental sustainability goals.
Projects
As part of QEERI’s commitment to sustainable water management, this project focuses on developing advanced treatment technologies to transform produced water (PW) from Qatar’s gas fields into a valuable resource. By addressing key contaminants such as salinity, organic pollutants, and heavy metals, the project aims to enable the safe reuse of treated PW for industrial and landscaping applications. This initiative supports Qatar’s National Vision 2030 by reducing reliance on groundwater and desalination, contributing to long-term water security and environmental sustainability.
Aligned with QEERI’s efforts to enhance water sustainability, this project aims to develop innovative, nature-based wastewater treatment solutions that maximize water reuse potential. By integrating membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) technology with hydrogel-biochar composites, the project enhances nutrient removal and water retention, supporting decentralized wastewater treatment and urban greening initiatives. The outcomes will provide scalable and energy-efficient solutions for Qatar’s wastewater management, contributing to national water security goals.
This project supports QEERI’s drive toward a circular economy by transforming organic waste into high-value biomaterials, such as microbial proteins, bioplastics, and biochar. By leveraging biotechnological innovations, the initiative aims to reduce waste disposal challenges, mitigate pollution, and enhance resource recovery across Qatar’s agricultural, aquaculture, and municipal sectors. The project aligns with Qatar’s sustainability objectives, fostering innovation in waste valorization and green manufacturing.
