Energy Center

Dr. Veronica Bermudez Benito, Senior Research Director, Energy Center

The Energy Center at Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), aims to support the competitiveness and sustainability of Qatar’s energy sector (generation, distribution, and consumption), providing countrywide solutions to support governmental and industrial sectors to achieve environmental sustainability in Qatar.

The center supports the achievement of a sustainable energy system in Qatar, that can contribute to CO2 footprint reduction of industrial plants including cement, water desalination, and natural gas processing plants to meet their heat and power demand towards a more electrified society to create a more sustainable ecosystem.

With around 50 highly qualified scientists and engineers with wide expertise, the Energy Center accounts for a number of publicly funded research projects, laboratories, and scientific demonstrations that support its core research. The center works on solutions vital for industry and society, with a clear market-driven approach that contributes to bridging the gap between academia and industry.

Associated with the adoption and optimization of renewable energy deployment, electrification and energy efficiency solutions, the Energy Center has demonstrated its commitment and excellence in the field of atmospheric carbon absorption and transformation into added value products, as well as effective methane management alternatives towards a sustainable circular economy.

The Energy Center focuses on optimizing exploitation of national strategic hydrocarbon resources, through proposing long-term maintenance of national strategic reserves and exploring effective methods of converting Qatar’s raw materials into additional high-value materials and products in addition to enhancing gas monetization channels.

The center also develops solutions related to the customization and deployment of knowledge and technology to optimize energy generation, distribution, and consumption in Qatar through developing efficient and sustainable energy systems, tools, and applications. This is done through extending support to national stakeholders in the transformation of Qatar energy landscape by examining solutions in energy consumption reduction in desalination processes, optimizing solar technologies for Qatar environment, contributing to the development, adaptation, and deployment of relevant new digital technologies in the energy sector and sustainable electricity production and efficient use.
