Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution

Group:  Quantum Communication
Status:  Planned
Duration:  2 years (October 2026 – September 2028)

Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution (TF-QKD) has emerged as one of the most significant advances in quantum communications, addressing the fundamental rate loss limitations of conventional quantum key distribution protocols. By enabling secure key rates that scale with the square root of channel loss, rather than linearly, TF-QKD can overcome the repeaterless secret-key capacity bound while retaining the security advantages of measurement-device-independent architectures. These characteristics make TF-QKD one of the most promising approaches for long-distance quantum-secure communication over optical fibre networks.

The primary objective of this project is to demonstrate high-rate secure key distribution over extended distances and under high-loss conditions, paving the way for practical quantum communication systems that operate beyond the performance limits of conventional QKD. At QC2’s Quantum Communication Group, we are advancing the development of TF-QKD technologies to enable robust, scalable, and secure communication over realistic telecom infrastructures.

In its initial phase, the TF-QKD testbed will establish a stable quantum-secure link between two distant fibre-connected nodes, serving as a proof of concept for long-haul quantum communication. Subsequent phases will introduce intermediate nodes, advanced synchronization mechanisms, and network-level functionalities to support the development of scalable quantum communication networks.

By pioneering TF-QKD deployment over operational fibre infrastructure, QC2 aims to address one of the key challenges in quantum communications: enabling ultra-long-distance, high-rate, and information-theoretically secure key distribution without the need for quantum repeaters. These efforts will contribute to the development of next-generation secure communication infrastructure while further strengthening Qatar’s position as a regional leader in quantum technology research and innovation.
