Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), was founded in 2010 to continue fulfilling QF’s vision of unlocking human potential. The College of Humanities & Social Sciences (CHSS) was established with a vision to enrich society in Qatar and across the wider world with transformative educational experiences that bridge disciplinary boundaries and offer the academic community opportunities to engage in innovative research and collaboration. We aspire to nurture a diverse body of academically grounded and socially responsible global citizens, whose versatility will enable them to navigate the complexities of today’s world and become the leaders of tomorrow.

The college currently offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Humanities and Social Sciences, and five interdisciplinary Master’s degree programs; an MA in Audiovisual Translation; an MA in Translation Studies; an MA in Intercultural Communication; an MA in Digital Humanities and Societies; and an MA in Women, Society and Development. The MA programs in Translation Studies and Audiovisual Translation are delivered by the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) and are internationally validated by the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

Position

We invite applications for a Full Professor position in Digital Humanities with expertise in AI ethics, bias, and fairness.

Job Role Description

Successful applicants will work closely with our established Digital Humanities and Societies Program, as well as other programs in the college, and will develop academic and research collaborations with potential national, regional, and international partners. They will also teach graduate courses at the MA level and contribute to curriculum development in their area(s) of specialty. They will supervise MA and Ph.D. students and will be committed to research-based teaching and learning. Teaching at HBKU requires the integration of experiential learning into classroom activities, encouraging students to develop their analytical skills to analyze and reflect on one of the fields stated above. Successful applicants are also expected to maintain an active research agenda by applying for internal and external research grants and participating in departmental and college-wide initiatives.

Overall, the successful applicants will be dynamic, experienced, and internationally recognized scholars with an innovative research agenda, as demonstrated through a strong, internationally recognized record of peer-reviewed publications and funding/grant acquisitions.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university as required for teaching in certain fields.
  • 10 – 12 years plus of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity.
  • Strong evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development.
  • Research and scholarly achievements deemed competent and adequate for the rank of Professor in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities.
  • Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization.
  • Strong growing portfolio of scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university.
  • Strong evidence for an increasing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline.
  • Ability to work with and lead diverse groups, cultures, and communities.
  • Active participation to develop networks and collaboration within HBKU, and with program partners and branch campuses in both teaching and research activities.
  • Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
