Maker Majlis is a platform operating under the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) for youth to engage in activities related to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It is a space
where the young leaders of the world can unleash their
creativity and innovative ideas to contribute to achieving the
SDGs.
The Maker Majlis hosts workshops, educational
programs, and
events focusing on the SDGs.
Anyone who has the drive to
make the world a more
just, equal, and inclusive world is eligible and encouraged to
participate in Maker Majlis activities.
The idea behind “Maker” is to inspire youth to make changes in the world through innovative solutions. It is an initiative that is intended to give a space for people to get creative. Relating it to the Muslim world, and Qatar in particular, the Majlis aims to add a cultural touch to the platform.
Muslims, especially in Qatar, are known to sit and gather in a Majlis setting, and the idea is to duplicate that experience for participants.
Maker Majlis focuses on connection, transformative dialogue, and synergy. Activities are specially designed around the exchange of ideas, aspirations, challenges, and solutions. It is a space where the young people of the world can create a collective vision of the future.
Today the world is going through a turbulent time due to COVID-19 and the complications emanating from it. But out of this crisis comes an opportunity to rethink our understanding of humanity and reignite action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals.
Today, we must assess various forms of inequality which often operate together and exacerbate one another. We also must look at how climate change interacts with and exacerbates these inequalities.
The Sustainable Development Goals recognize this complexity and can serve as our North Star as we respond to and recover from this crisis, making the world fairer, more sustainable, and more inclusive. The Design Post Covid Humanity program of Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar Foundation is a good example of how we can work together to move towards this future.
Maker Majlis: Islam in a Global World was an event that took place from September 22-25, 2019.
