Issa Khalil received his PhD degree in Computer Engineering from Purdue University, USA in 2007. Currently, he is a Principal Scientist in the Cyber Security Group at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI).
Before Joining QCRI, Dr. Khalil was an Associate Professor and Department Head of the Information Security Department in the College of Information Technology (CIT) at the United Arab Emirates University. His novel techniques to discover malicious domains following the guilt-by-association social principle attract the attention of local media and stakeholders, and he received the best paper award in CODASPY 2018.
Dr. Khalil’s research in detecting and predicting threat indicators through data analytics resulted in five US patents and patent disclosures, licensing to national and international security providers, publications in top tier security venues, and has been translated into a full-fledged system for threat intelligence generation and sharing that can be consumed by end users as well as SOC/NOC operators. Dr. Khalil has served as organizer, technical program committee member, and reviewer for many international conferences and journals. He is a senior member of IEEE, a member of ACM, and delivers invited talks and keynotes in many local and international forums. In June 2011, Khalil was granted the CIT Outstanding Professor Award for outstanding performance in research, teaching, and service.
