Dr. Kabir H. Biswas, an Assistant Professor in the College of Health and Life Sciences (CHLS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has been recognized for his research in the field of cell-to-cell adhesion with an invited article published in the Trends in Biochemical Sciences journal. Cell-cell adhesion is a fundamental feature of multicellular organisms crucial for a variety of processes including development of different organs in humans and spreading of cancer to different parts of the body (metastasis). His research is focused toward better understanding the interaction between cells in the human body with the aim of treating cancers, especially of the breast. Dr. Biswas primarily engineers synthetic, nano- and micron-scale patterned surfaces coated with biological materials (biointerfaces) to control activities in living cells at the nanometer and micrometer length scales, in addition to developing sensors for detecting cellular events, approaches that complement genomics and other large-scale initiatives in Qatar.
