Orientation 23:24: Usama Aliyu College of Health and Life Sciences, Hamad Bin Khalifa University | Hamad Bin Khalifa University

HBKU Orientation: Usama Aliyu, College of Health and Life Sciences

17 Aug 2023

Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s innovative research ecosystem inspires many students to make the transition from Master’s to PhD studies. These include the CHLS’ Usama Aliyu, who’s determined to make his academic mark in the field of genomics and precision medicine.

Usama Aliyu looks to contribute to diabetes and insulin resistance research during his time in the PhD in Genomics and Precision Medicine program.

What is it about the program, college and HBKU that attracted you to join?

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has already helped me to fulfill my dream of studying genomics and precision medicine. Upon completing my undergraduate studies in my native Nigeria I was determined to apply to a university that provides its students with an unparalleled platform  to thrive and make a significant impact in their chosen fields. I was accepted and graduated from the College of Health and Life Sciences’ (CHLS) Master of Science in Genomics and Precision Medicine with a st CGPA of 3.96/4.00 , which led to a subsequent PhD offer. As a recipient of the prestigious Qatar Genome Program (QGP) scholarship, I was privileged to receive a 100% tuition waiver, enabling me to focus wholeheartedly on my academic pursuits.

The CHLS’ PhD in Genomics and Precision Medicine program stands out as one of the most distinguished in the region. With a meticulously designed curriculum that integrates genomics, data analysis, and bioinformatics, the program offers a comprehensive and holistic understanding of personalized medicine, equipping students  with the necessary skills to address real-world challenges in healthcare.

What are your aspirations for your time at HBKU?

My time at HBKU has already been marked by outstanding achievements and profound personal growth, and my aspirations for the future are no less ambitious. As I embark on my Ph.D. journey in Genomics and Precision Medicine, I am determined to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and contribute to diabetes and insulin resistance research.

My primary aspiration is to conduct cutting-edge research that addresses critical challenges in healthcare and has a positive impact on patient outcomes. I am particularly interested in exploring the application of genomics in understanding the complex nature of diabetes and insulin resistance,  with the aim of developing more personalized and effective treatments. I am eager to collaborate with renowned faculty members and research teams from Qatar Biobank (QBB) and QGP to further explore and contribute to this field.

Additionally, I am passionate about knowledge sharing and want to foster an environment of collaboration and inspire future generations to unlock their potential, just as Qatar Foundation (QF) did for me.

How do you feel an HBKU education will assist your career goals?

HBKU's comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to genomics and precision medicine will equip me with the necessary skills and expertise to excel in my future career. The university's emphasis on research and innovation will provide ample opportunities to collaborate with leading experts in the field, helping me establish a strong network of connections within the scientific community.

Moreover, the supportive and nurturing academic environment at HBKU will equip me with the necessary skills to become an effective educator and mentor, enabling me to share knowledge and inspire others in their academic and research pursuits.

Beyond the academic realm, the leadership and communication skills I aim to develop at HBKU will be invaluable in my future career. As I progress in my Ph.D. journey, I will have opportunities to present my research at international conferences and collaborate with researchers from renowned institutions, building a strong network within the scientific community.
