SARS-CoV-2: Diagnostic Stewardship for COVID-19

Patients can be tested for suspected COVID-19 because of contact tracing. 

The interpretation of results is closely linked to an understanding of the viral kinetics of SARS-CoV-2, the RNA virus responsible for the pandemic, and this aspect of patient management will be discussed in the talk. 

Speaker:

Dr. Peter Coyle, Senior Consultant, Head of Virology, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)

Dr. Coyle joined HMC in March 2017 as a senior consultant in virology. He qualified in medicine and trained in microbiology and virology in Belfast and Atlanta. He qualified as a Fellow of the College of Pathologists (London) and completed a Doctoral Thesis at Queen's University Belfast. He was employed as a consultant virologist in the Regional Virology Laboratory in Belfast, supporting both the hospital and Public Health sectors. He is part of the scientific organizing committee of the 2019 and 2020 European Society for Clinical Virology meetings in Copenhagen and Manchester, and an External Examiner to University of Manchester. He has published 120 papers and is a Board Editor for the Journal of Medical Microbiology. He holds an Honorary Professor of Microbiology post with Queen’s University Belfast and an Adjunct Professorship in the Biomedical Research Center of Qatar University.
