Exploring Religion in Europe: The Limits of Law and Pluralism

13Feb2019

DISTINGUISHED LECTURER SERIES

While pluralism is often regarded as a positive development in Western societies, the mix of different religious and cultural identities have raised some unique challenges for secular communities.

In Europe, in recent years, Islam has been at the forefront of most debates about religion, law and human rights, where the tension is less about doctrine and more about values.

This lecture will explore how religious communities are diverse but often accused of demanding legal exceptionalism. This includes Muslims, who must challenge the reductive view of Shari’a law.

Speaker:

Dr. Mona Siddiqui, Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies, The University of Edinburgh

The event will be held in English, with simultaneous Arabic interpretation.
