The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) recently hosted Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Elfatih Eltahir as a guest speaker for its seminar on the Regional Impacts of Global Climate Change.

As an established expert who has spearheaded pivotal research on the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on global warming, specifically in the Middle East, Professor Eltahir is best positioned to provide significant insights on the environmental challenges facing the region.

Dr. Mounir Hamdi, dean of CSE, said: “Climate change features high on the global agenda, and it is therefore imperative that there is greater awareness and cooperation to mitigate its effects.

“Hosting a speaker of Professor Eltahir’s caliber provided the wider community with an overview of his extensive research on climate change and the need for responsible and sound policies. We were also able to benefit from his recommendations for a sustainable environmental strategy and alleviation of the effects of the global environmental phenomenon.”

During his visit, Professor Eltahir underscored the importance of educating society on the regional impact of global climate change to inform the ongoing mitigation debate. He also presented examples of his research on future heatwaves in Asia, predictions about malaria transmission in Africa, and projections of water availability in the Nile basin.

CSE regularly hosts seminars to showcase the expertise of leading local and international researchers, and to promote a greater understanding of topical regional and global issues.  The college offers 12 dynamic degrees encompassing areas deemed critical for Qatar and the region for many years to come. With special emphasis on graduate education, CSE is shaping the local and international academic landscapes with highly selective programs, some of which specialize in sustainable development.
