Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Shaybani (d. 189/805) was one of the earliest Muslim jurists who wrote abundantly on issues under the ‘Siyar’ genre, which today fall under the discipline of international relations. This symposium will highlight his pioneering role in this field, how his ideas were adopted, adapted and developed over time not only in the Muslim context, but by practitioners of faith and academics outside the Muslim world.
