The Blue Qur’an is one of the most famous Islamic manuscripts, with leaves currently dispersed across collections worldwide. It is a relic that invites reflection about artistic horizons far beyond its own.

Even though it has received substantial scholarly attention, the date and origin of the Blue Qur’an remain in contention. 

In this lecture, we will seek to place the Blue Qur’an within the context not only of other Qur’anic manuscripts and Muslim religious architecture, but also Byzantine Bibles and Chinese Buddhist sutras.
