Ibn Taymiyya's Methodology Regarding his Sources: Reading, Selection and Use

Over the past two decades, the growing number of works on Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728/1328) confirms the ever-growing interest, of scholars, in the famous Ḥanbalī theologian of Damascus, who is undeniably one of the most studied and well-known medieval Muslim theologians. 

In addition to the diversity of the subjects covered, the analysis of Ibn Taymiyya’s writings demonstrates the author’s vast erudition and his argumentation methodology, which was both efficient and complex. Even though he has been the subject of research in both the Arab world and Western scholarship, gray areas remain regarding what can be called Ibn Taymiyyah’s source methodology.  

This lecture will highlight some preliminary information on Ibn Taymiyyah’s way of reading and selection and use of sources in his argumentation methodology.
