This lecture is the second of the “What is Sharia?” three-part public lecture series, which comprises separate lectures that will each explore an aspect of Sharia that informs the fields of legal knowledge and practice, and from which comparative and critical insights are drawn.

This lecture explores the value of humans in Islamic law and compares it to modern legal discourse. The argument being presented is that modernity, as a whole, has lost sight of what the “human” is, instead instrumentalizing it for material and political ends. Through a heuristic comparison with Sharia, this lecture aims to critique modern values by examining a lived cultural experience in history.
