Genomics and Genome Technologies

This core contains four units with high-end instrumentation for real time RT-PCR, Sanger Sequencing, Genotyping and Molecular Karyotyping and Massively Parallel Sequencing. The facility also supports researchers with Next Generation Sequencing, high-throughput genotyping, digital PCR, gene expression and single-cell genomics.

The Genomics Core Facility at QBRI actively supports scientific research by providing advanced research technologies and methods to the research community at HBKU and QBRI, and their collaborators from academia and industries to address the complex biomedical problems of QBRI’s research interests in the field of cancer biology, metabolic disorders and neurological diseases. The genomics core laboratory is equipped with various state-of-the-art, high-throughput technological platforms to sequence the nucleic acids by next-generation sequencing (NGS) as well by capillary sequencing methods; high-throughput genotyping studies by Illumina iScan system; and to study the expression of genes by NGS technologies, single cell platforms and targeted quantitative and digital PCR methods.

Genomics core laboratory operation is aligned to support the vision and mission of QBRI based on the following fundamentals;

  • Assisting the researchers with design of an experiment, providing intellectual support and novel method development for genomics experiments;
  • Advanced training in genome technologies for the graduate students and researchers;
  • Interface with other core technological platforms to facilitate integrated biology research;
  • Collaborative research.

The facilities and instruments that are available at QBRI Genomics Core Facility are classified broadly under the following categories

    • Illumina HiSeq 4000 and 2500 (high throughput sequencing of genomes and transcriptomes)
    • Illumina MiSeq (for smaller genome. amplicon sequencing and targeted Sequencing)

    • Illumina iScan systems (Illumina Bead Array technology for high-throughput SNP genotype analysis)
    • AB 3730xl 96 capillaries and 3100xl 16 capillaries Genetic Analyzers (for standard targeted sequencing and fragment analysis)
  • Targeted Gene Expression Analysis
    • QuantStudio 12K Plus for qPCR and Digital PCR and Gene Expression Panels studies
    • NanoString Technologies (targeted gene expression for up to 800 genes)
    • AB 7900 Real-Time PCR System
  • Single Cell Analysis
    • Fluidigm C1 Single-Cell Auto Prep & BioMark HD Systems
    • Fluidigm Access Array Sample Enrichment (efficient library preparation)
    • BIO-RAD ddSEQ System
