The Director of the Translation and Training Center sets the strategy, business plan and budget for the Department as well as monitoring and directing all educational and paid services offered by the department and ensuring alignment to all approved objectives and targets to achieve high performance in terms of growth, efficiency and effectiveness and achievement of the Institute’s vision and mission.
Key Result Areas:
- Set the overall strategy and direction of the Translation and Training Center in coordination with the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).
- Prepare the business plan and annual budget for the Translation and Training Center in line with the guidelines that meet the overall objective of the Center, TII, CHSS, and HBKU.
- Monitor the annual budget, highlight any variances and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to maintain the assigned budget.
- Maintain Translation Services culture and reputation amongst staff, customers, key stakeholders and regulatory/official bodies to ensure that the paid Professional Services as well as the Translation and Interpreting Institute continue to set high standards within the community and internationally.
- Research and identify the translation needs of the market and recommend services to be provided to enhance the Translation and Training Center offerings to serve a larger audience and meet financial objectives.
- Provide regular progress and statistical reports on activities and progress of the Translation and Training Center, ensuring it meets the required technical and financial targets.
- Oversee the studio/lab and all related equipment and software at the Translation and Training Center, ensuring that they are functioning effectively and efficiently as required.
- Oversee and monitor the activities of the staff and functions and take action relating to any required improvements to ensure that the outcomes meet the objectives of the Translation and Training Center section and the Institute.
- Participate in the hiring and evaluation of staff, ensuring fairness and equality and that the Translation and Training Center acquires the required skills.
- Monitor and manage the Translation and Training Center academic and paid services, ensuring operational compliance with the Institute’s and College’s policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Attend and represent the Translation and Training Center in local, regional and international conferences as well as at similar institutions and develop and maintain strong relationships for future collaboration and promotion of the Institute.
- He/She is responsible for all staff and other resources at the section.
- Abide by all QF, HBKU, CHSS and the Institute’s policies and procedures and ensure all subordinate staff abide by the same.
Key Qualifications:
- Postgraduate degree in Translation Studies or any related field.
- Five to ten years of experience in both academic field and business field.
- Knowledge of the latest translation services, technologies, methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of local and internal protocols.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Computer literacy: MS windows applications (word processing, excel, spreadsheets, power point...).
- Fluency in English and Arabic; fluency in other languages is preferred (French, Spanish, German etc.)
- Competency in resolving a wide range of issues arising from the work of the section.
- Strong managerial skills as well as technical skills.
