About Qatar Biomedical Research Institute:

Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is a national center of excellence in biomedical research. It aims to transform healthcare through harnessing and converting the latest advances in science, medicine and technology into novel discoveries that will lead to more effective treatments and preventive strategies for human diseases such as: diabetes, cancer and neurological disorders. The institute strives toward the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to facilitate early diagnosis, treatment and management of these devastating diseases with the purpose of improving personalized medicine and healthcare. QBRI has recently occupied state-of-the-art life sciences laboratories in a newly established research campus.

Job Purpose:

To lead scientific research work of strategic importance to the growth & developmental needs of QBRI and Qatar while solving problems of national challenges relating to high priority healthcare areas such as cancer, diabetes, and neurological disorders, or a combination of these fields.

Key Result Areas:

  • Develop and conduct independent/joint original research contributing to the institute's programs working independently and as part of a team in order to create unique, impactful science in an area of research expertise
  • Develop multidisciplinary research programs with synergies to on-going research agenda to achieve an international standard for science and research activities
  • Contribute to the development of QBRI's overall research strategy, business plan, research road map and execution
  • Support & implement programs and initiatives for setting up the Centre's infrastructure & laboratory facilities to ensure achievement of the center's objectives & milestones
  • Prepare and submit research proposals to appropriate national and international agencies in order to secure competitive funding complementing HBKU resources
  • Contribute to research projects administrative functions and monitoring request
  • Participate in research conferences & seminars in their field of expertise. Produce conference, seminar papers and publications from research
  • Supervise & train Master/PhD students, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, research-support and technical staff in relevant areas of work
  • Ensure proper records & documentation of research experiments, samples & specimens examined or maintained simultaneously ensuring accuracy of laboratory reports
  • Ensure adequate levels of consumable supplies & other items required are managed & used appropriately
  • Have joint appointment at HBKU & contribute to teaching
  • Participate in recruitment & selection process of QBRI staff members & scientists
  • Assist with, & where appropriate be responsible for, policies & procedures to ensure that QBRI meets
  • research quality objectives towards accreditation standards. Implement new procedures within the QBRI as appropriate.
  • Provide progress reports, analyses, recommendations & presentations to cross-functional teams & research center director
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor

Operating Environment, Framework & Boundaries:

  • Duties are performed in an office & laboratory setting, complying with all relevant HBKU policies & procedures, regulatory/best practice requirements & protocols & National and governmental agencies' research compliance protocols & procedures

Communications and Working Relationships:

  • Supervisor - frequent contact to provide project updates and receive guidance & approvals
  • Other researchers & scientists (locally, regionally and internationally) - regular contact to maintain expertise, knowledge sharing, and to keep current with latest technological and research developments relevant to the field
  • Other stakeholders across the biomedical landscape of Qatar - Interact & collaborate as needed

  • Evaluates, compares and relates information from across the business
  • Identifies broader implications of proposed solutions across the organization
  • Uses own experience and evidence from theory, other industries and technologies to identify problems and understand situations
  • Reviews existing policy to enable effective problem solving and judgment by the team

  • Exhibits sound judgment to anticipate potential implications of all decisions; balances benefits and risks and identifies areas of uncertainty
  • Evaluates information by penetrating questions, thus ensuring complete information is available to make an informed decision
  • Arrives at well-researched decisions that balance quality service and cost
  • Encourages and supports appropriate risk taking by subordinates when making decisions

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • A PhD in sciences with hands-on laboratory experience with domain knowledge in technologies relevant to their field of expertise
  • 6 years of relevant professional experience with a demonstrated strong track record of publications, scholarly output, conference papers, reports and/or professional and/or technical contributions in the relevant scientific discipline
  • Outstanding contributor to original research with a minimum of 25 Original Articles, Scientific rigor and superior knowledge in scientific research methods as well as evaluation of research results
  • An independent thinker with the capacity to formulate & execute innovate scientific strategies, lab operations, & to champion their ideas and projects
  • Able to motivate and lead research teams & initiate collaborations, partnerships, & build & embrace local stakeholders relations
  • Excellent presentation, communication & writing skills with the ability to draft & edit a variety of
  • written reports & communications & to articulate ideas clearly & concisely; Arabic proficiency is an advantage
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
