Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), was founded in 2010 to continue fulfilling QF’s vision of unlocking human potential. Job Purpose:

To contribute towards the institute's research efforts and to develop his/her research program through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to their particular field of expertise.

Key Result Areas:

  • Conduct research under limited supervision either as a member of a team or independently to contribute toward the recognition of marked distinction in an area of research
  • Work as part of a research team developing new research objectives, methodologies, and solutions, and suggesting animal models to any area of high priority diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, & infectious diseases or a combination of those fields
  • Develop project plans, design experiments, carry out laboratory protocols or research procedures 'Jo Operate and utilize laboratory equipment and enabling platforms proficiently
  • Apply scientific principles, perform literature searches, attend scientific meetings, and keep abreast of literature, current technological, and scientific developments in own field
  • Produce research reports and seminar papers from research that can contribute towards peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Prepare research proposal submissions to appropriate national and international agencies in order to secure competitive funding
  • Participate and present in research conferences and seminars
  • Ensure appropriate records and documentation of research experiments, examined samples and specimens are maintained, and accurate laboratory reports are kept
  • Maintain electronic and hardcopy data files, laboratory notebooks, and reports in compliance with the Research policy and Qatar Foundation (QF) Intellectual Property Rights
  • Provide occasional contributions to the teaching programs within Education City and Qatar within the field of expertise where needed
  • Mentor & supervise B.Sc. and M.Sc. research projects where appropriate
  • Facilitate the relevant training and mentoring of Research Associates/Technical Staff
  • Interact and communicate with the interdisciplinary team of Technical Staff and Scientists with expertise in complementary disciplines
  • Assist with, and where appropriate be responsible for, policies and procedures to ensure that research quality objectives meet accreditation standards
  • Ensure adequate levels of consumable supplies & other items required are managed & used appropriately
  • Support in the development and monitoring of key performance research indicators (KPIs)
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor

Operating Environment, Framework & Boundaries:

  • Duties are performed in an office & laboratory setting, complying with all relevant HBKU policies & procedures, regulatory/best practice requirements & protocols & National and governmental agencies' research compliance protocols & procedures

Communications and Working Relationships:

  • Supervisor - frequent contact to report on work progress & receive work instructions & feedback
  • Other researchers and scientists (locally, regionally and internationally) - regular contact for knowledge sharing to keep abreast with latest technological and research developments.

Problem Solving & Complexity:

  • Evaluates, compares and relates information from across the business Identifies broader implications of proposed solutions across the organization
  • Uses own experience and evidence from theory, other industries and technologies to identify problems and understand situations
  • Reviews existing policy to enable effective problem solving and judgment by the team

Decision-Making Authority & Responsibility:

  • Exhibits sound judgment to anticipate potential implications of all decisions; balances benefits and risks and identifies areas of uncertainty
  • Evaluates information by penetrating questions, thus ensuring complete information is available to make an informed decision
  • Arrives at well-researched decisions that balance quality service and cost
  • Encourages and supports appropriate risk taking by subordinates when making decisions

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field 3 years of relevant full-time work experience with minimum of 15 original articles publications in area of expertise
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Experience in supervising and training young scientists
  • Demonstrate strong record of publications, conference papers, reports and/or professional / technical contributions in the relevant scientific discipline
  • Ability to work within established timelines including organizing workload and priority setting Concise and accurate reporting of technical data and interpretation thereof
  • Appropriate level of understanding of applicable research regulations
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency an advantage
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
