Dr. Doris Behrens-Abouseif will discuss the revival of Egypt’s Islamic architecture and traditional crafts in the 19th century and its connections to European activities in Egypt at that time. 

Exploration, archaeology, surveys, and albums reveal a fascination for what was called ‘Arab Art’ and culminated in heritage preservation and the conservation of Islamic monuments. The eventual creation of the Neo-Mamluk style helped shape Egypt’s artistic identity in the age of colonialism and even to the present day.
