Technical Services Lead

Job Purpose

Responsible for the deployment of information systems and works collaboratively with the library staff and the IT team to ensure that the library systems are integrated well and meet the current and future needs of the University

Key Result Areas

  • Serve as the main technical lead for the Integrated Library System (ILS) software, the online public access catalog (OPAC), and Library applications
  • Work with APIs and programming languages to solve issues and develop innovative services
  • Manage the process of issuing new library cards; renews/updates customer registration records as necessary; inputs information into databases
  • Serve as primary contact with ILS vendor
  • Troubleshoot problems with the ILS and act as a liaison between the vendor and Library staff members to report problems and ensure their solutions
  • Manage connection to electronic resources for HBKU constituents; update and maintain the proxy server
  • Deliver educational and informational sessions to the public as well as information services team members
  • Manage assigned projects (tracking tasks, progress, budgets, timelines, KPIs)
  • Work with the IT team at HBKU and QF IT regarding firewall issues, server availability, software installations, and other connectivity and access issues
  • Assist in the management of the online catalog
  • Develop the library website, discovery service, and related systems
  • Generate library statistical reports
  • Develop, manage, and implement digital repositories
  • Serve as technical support for library equipment troubleshooting and upgrades.
  • Analyze systems’ usage
  • Evaluate needs, create, and deliver workshops on the use of library systems for staff
  • Maintain the security and confidentiality of any proprietary or sensitive data
  • Assess the effectiveness of electronic resources and identify ways to make Library access more effective and efficient
  • Participate in the evaluation, selection, deselection, and ordering of materials in all media individually and as part of the Collection Development team
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures as needed to ensure the efficient operation and management of Library systems
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor

Operating Environment, Framework & Boundaries

Work is performed in a standard office environment. Some work outside of normal working hours may be required. Must comply with QF health, safety, and environment policy as well as legal regulations applicable to areas of responsibility. A high degree of confidentiality is required.

Communications and Working Relationships

  • Supervisor – frequent contact to provide guidance, work instructions and approvals
  • Library team – daily contact for work progress updates and to resolve any library-related issues
  • HBKU IT & QF IT – frequent contact to coordinate and support activities on matters related to firewall issues, server availability, software installations, and other connectivity and access issues.
  • Students, faculty, and researchers – contact as needed to provide assistance

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library Science and Information Technology (or equivalent), MLIS is highly preferred
  • 6-8 years of library experience, preferably in an academic library
  • Experience delivering educational and informational sessions to the public as well as information services team members
  • Demonstrated project management experience (tracking tasks, progress, budgets, timelines, KPIs)
  • Demonstrated experience managing integrated library systems, content management systems, and other discovery systems
  • Experience developing and/or supporting systems and strategies for automated library workflows
  • Firm understanding of current metadata and cataloging standards and processes
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical issues and solutions to a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Familiarity with user-centered design to support usability testing of library systems and services
  • Familiarity with library technology standards and protocols such as FRBR, Z39.50, OAI/PHM, RDA
  • Familiarity with library information systems, remote access, and authentication workflows
  • Experience with scripting or programming to automate tasks
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency is an advantage
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
